Stories of Success: From Graduate Students to Medical Students

For many incoming Biomedical Sciences graduate students at PCOM South Georgia, the start of a new academic journey can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. As the classes of 2027 and 2028 prepare for a life-changing opportunity, three former graduate students are sharing their experiences and offering encouragement for the years ahead.

LMU-DCOM Anatomy Professor Presents Research at International Conference in Australia

Dr. Erick Moberg, assistant professor of anatomy at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM), recently presented his research on anatomy education at the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists Conference in Melbourne, Australia, joining anatomy educators and researchers from around the world.

Moberg was selected to present portions of his dissertation research after his work was accepted for inclusion in the prestigious international conference. His poster, titled “Enhancing the Spatial Learning Experience in Medical Gross Anatomy While Evaluating 2D vs. 3D Instructional Approaches to Teaching Medical Images of the Hand,” examines how 3D-printed anatomical models can improve students’ understanding of complex anatomical relationships. From a Remote Village in China to TCOM, Jennie Liu Carries Her Grandmother’s Legacy into Medicine

For Jennie Liu, the dream of becoming a physician began long before she understood what medicine would ask of her. It began with stories from her grandmother when Liu was just five years old. Her grandmother was a rare find: a female physician who practiced medicine in China during the beginning of the communist era in the 1950s. She worked in a small village north of Shenyang, China where resources were scarce. Her grandmother sometimes traveled by rickshaw to the city to help patients, delivered babies in the middle of the night and, when necessary, gave patients some of her own food because of strict meat allotments. Urology Physicians Impacted by Residency Program Make Contribution to Scholarship

A group of physicians who spent time in Charleston Area Medical Center’s  urology residency program, which was co-created and developed by James Tierney, DO, have shown how much the program impacted them through financial contributions to a scholarship in Tierney’s name.

The James Tierney, DO, Legacy Scholarship was created in October 2024 in honor of Tierney, a 1980 West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) graduate. A year later, Samuel Deem, DO, and the WVSOM Foundation, the school’s nonprofit office responsible for philanthropic efforts, worked together to encourage other physicians to donate. The scholarship currently totals $94,992. Read more.

VCOM-Louisiana Students Provide OMM to Community at Health and Wellness Expo

Recently, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Louisiana Campus (VCOM-Louisiana) students were out in the community, serving at the 8th Annual Community Health & Wellness Expo. Under the supervision of VCOM faculty member Chris Clark, DO, students demonstrated osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) and gave community members an opportunity to experience OMM, most for the first time. Serving at the event provided students with the opportunity to put their skills into practice while connecting with and educating the community about what makes osteopathic medicine different.
